Tomato - Free Pattern

Updated: May 1, 2021

Ahhh, the tomato. A simple and tasty fruit (yes, it is fruit) with an interesting history. Due to its being a member of a nightshade family, the whole plant was once believed to be poisonous. And while the leaves are poisonous, we all know that those shiny little beauties are delicious and healthy!

When it comes to children, it's been shown that they are often led by example. So if we put tomatoes on our plate, so might they. And why not include that in their play? So, here I have a pattern to share with you.

YOU WILL NEED:

Worsted Weight yarn (2 colors - green and your chosen tomato color)

4mm crochet hook

polyfill stuffing

CROCHET TERMS:

MC – magic circle – a good video tutorial of this can be found at the following link https://www.thefriendlyredfox.com/crochet-magic-circle/

ch - chain

sc - single crochet

inc - 2 sc in one stitch

sc2tog - decrease 2 sc using the invisible decrease method (put hook through FRONT LOOP ONLY of next 2 stitches [3 loops on hook], yarn over and pull through 2 loops 2 times)

TO MAKE:

Tomato - in chosen color:

Working in continuous rounds:

Rnd 1: 6 sc in MC

Rnd 2: inc in each sc around (12)

Rnd 3: (sc 1, inc in next) x6 (18)

Rnd 4: (sc 2, inc in next) x6 (24)

Rnd 5: (sc 3, inc in next) x6 (30)

Rnd 6: (sc 4, inc in next) x6 (36)

Rnd 7- 10: sc around

Rnd 11: (sc4, sc2tog) x6 (30)

Rnd 12: sc around

Rnd 13: (sc3, sc2tog) x6 (24)

Rnd 14: (sc2, sc2tog) x6 (18) Begin stuffing your tomato at this point.

Rnd 15: sc2tog around (9)

Rnd 16: (sc1, sc2tog) x4 (5)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Using a tapestry needle, weave the tail through the last 5 stitches and pull tight to close. At this point, I run the tail through the middle of the tomato to the beginning rnd and back again to the last a couple of times , pulling slightly so as to shape the fruit. Weave in ends.

Stem- in green

Ch 5.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 2 - 3: Sc in back loop of each sc of previous row. Ch 1 and turn

Row 4: Slst 1st row and last row together. Working in ends of rows, sc 4 around.

Next row: In each sc work : sc, hdc, ch 2, slst in 2nd ch from hook, sc, slst. Fasten off, leaving tail and sew the stem to the tomato. Weave in ends.

And there it is, the first of the fruit (and veggies) that I will share with you.
